While most of us are still deciding where we actually stand with “ama piano”, we can most certainly agree that 2019 has been nothing less than gratifying. Hits are being served one after the other by both musicians within and musicians beyond Zimbabwean borders, and gratitude is a must! that’s a line from Koffee’s Toast in case that did not register. Winky D is definitely one of my favourites this year and basically every other year lol, thanks in large part to his hit featuring Gemma Griffiths, MuGarden. We hope there’s more still to come from him, I mean the year’s still fresh Chiextra!
Even in the darkest of times, music has always been an integral part of our being and we’ll never forget the lives that were lost in Chipinge earlier this year. With that being said, a heartfelt shout out to JP, for responding with his beautiful dirge “Chikomo”. On a lighter note, Zimbos everywhere have recently adopted a new mental for representing their homeland, Tamy Moyo’s “Kwandinobva” is a good example, which is arguably one of her best pieces of art, yet!
Okay, okay let’s talk about Takura’s Zvemoyo (pun intended). We have come to learn to expect nothing but the best from Takura and this song is no exception. Other local jams that certainly made waves in 2019, so far include Simba Tags’ “My Lover (feat. Mr Eazi)”, Tocky Vibez’s “Binga” and TV Room by Hillzy and Garry Mapanzure, perhaps you might also want to check out another one of his songs – Slow.
If empowerment is not this year’s theme, then it should. I’m sure you already have an idea of what I’m talking about, you guessed it! Mr Eazi’s emPawa program that sought to grow emerging independent artists into global superstars. More than 1000 emerging talents entered, but only 100 could share the $300, 000 and only 10 were selected for a masterclass in South Africa, including our homeboy Union5, be sure to check out his song, falling.
It is without a doubt that Nasty C loves Zimbabwe, and that love is not unrequited and we couldn’t be more excited with his new album dropping soon!

Last year we lost a gem but still this year he blessed us with an entire album titled “TIM”, R.I.P Avicii (also, R.I.P Nipsey Hussle). Other albums that are totally worth checking out include “Father of Asahd” by DJ Khaled (5 star parenting, 5 star music), The People’s Rapper by Asaph, Scrip Mula’s “Scripian, Where Do We Go” and Khalid’s “Free Spirit”. Apparently, Rihanna was joking when she said “new album in 2019” (HA. HA!).
